이는 관용적으로 '돌려서 말하다'라고 사용되는데요.

사냥꾼들 중에 조수를 데리고 다니는 사람들이 있었습니다.

그 조수들은 사냥꾼이 사냥감을 모색하는데 도움을 주었는데요.

덤불에 숨어있는 토끼, 새 등의 동물들을 밖으로 나오게 하기 위해서

덤불 주변을 막대기로 치는 행동을 하였답니다.

덤불을 직접 때리면 멧돼지 등의 큰 동물들이 뛰쳐나올 가능성이 있어서

덤불 주변을 (around) 때리게 된 것에서 비롯된 말이 바로 Beat around the bush입니다
